As you all know, delivery and courier services such as those on
Shiply or
Freeindex using vans or trucks release a lot of CO2 into the environment. This is no way good for the environment as well as ourselves on the long term. Therefore, why don't we start making delivery services like house removals more eco-friendly?
Firstly, start from the vehicles. There are more and more eco-friendly vehicles available now. There are also new fuels being developed for car transport. The cost at the moment is a barrier to delivery companies but I believe it will change in the near future with more technology being developed.
Getting furniture delivered usually means getting a van to bring it to you, but next time you buy your tables and chairs online, try to find a driver who is making the journey anyway, that way you can get your delivery with less CO2 emissions.
New Fuels!
There are lots of interesting developments in the fuel market going on right now, electric, biofuels and hydrogen are all new possibilities to replace gasoline as the fuel for the future.
Lets look at the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Electric:
Advantages - Quiet, clean, lower emissions, available technology.
Electric cars are already being produced but aren't selling very well right now. This is probably due to their disadvantages.
Disadvantages - Expensive, slow, long recharge times, emissions from charging source.
Electric cars cost way more than their petrol counterparts, what's more the bulk of the batteries means that they can't go as fast. Electric cars currently can require 8 hours charging! When you compare that to filling up a petrol car that's insane.
Biofuels
Advantages - Made from natural materials, can be mixed with existing fuels, can be cheap
Biofuels are made from fermenting and processing natural materials with potential energy within them, such as sugar cane or soy crops. This results in less emissions out of the car but there are still drawbacks.
Disadvantages - Biofuels use lots of land, makes food costs go up, can harm eco-systems.
Biofuels can take up a lot of space to fulfil the equivalent amount of energy contained within fossil fuels. The land could be used for agriculture which means that food costs can rise.
Hydrogen
Advantages - Very clean, high compression, abundant element.
Hydrogen is the most common element in the universe and when it is used as car fuel it only gives out water, making it sound like the best thing to come around in new fuels but...
Disadvantages - Can explode, high energy to extract, inefficient transfer to power
Being highly flammable hydrogen is a very dangerous fuel to work with, mix with that the fact that it has to be stored under high pressure and you have a very risky car. What's more hydrogen is almost always found attached to other elements, which means that it can take more energy to split it off and make it usable than the output it would provide for transport Also going from fuel to wheel the fuel can lose a great percentage of it's energy.
What do you think, which will come out on top as the next big fuel?
